Triumph Park Signage: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work at This New Sports Complex

On any given Saturday this summer, there is a line of cars pulling into Triumph Park in Waukee, Iowa. Kids are pouring out of minivans and SUVs with backpacks loaded down with water bottles, bats, and gloves. As the kids run off to their fields, their parents are loading up wagons with a tower of collapsible chairs, blankets, and coolers packed with snacks and Gatorade. They’re ready for a full day of cheering on their little slugger.

The new 66-acre park is home to 12 softball and baseball fields, practice areas, concessions, an 11-acre pond, greenspaces, trails, and a 15,000-square-foot inclusive playground. This impressive sports complex and park was designed by Confluence, a landscape architectural firm with an office in Des Moines.

Outdoor Architectural Signage

When the landscape architects at Confluence were ready to plan signage for the Triumph Park outdoor complex, they turned to us to consult. “We have a very collaborative relationship with Confluence,” says Pat Mescher, Business Development Manager for Latitude. “They have very talented designers, and for this project, we took a consultative approach. We did some value engineering on the designs to find materials that would be durable, produce the look they wanted, and save them some money. The whole project was a team effort.”

The signature look for the park signs are fabricated aluminum letters sitting on black aluminum trestle-style structures that welcome visitors to the park at several places within the park. The design is used on a monument sign as well as in a 10-and-a-half-foot tall sign near the ball fields. The 20-foot wide structure is the perfect place to gather the team for a group pic after winning a big tournament.

Outdoor Donor Wall Signage

One of the most impressive signs at the park is the donor wall. On one side of the concessions stand, there is are 6-foot-tall letters spelling out Triumph on the wall. Vertical aluminum fins run across the face of the sign. Each fin stands two-inches off the wall and is spaced two inches apart, creating a cool visual effect as you walk by the wall. On closer inspection you’ll see that donor names have been applied to the fins in vinyl. This design offers plenty of space to add donor names in the future. Below the sign, the major donors are listed on concrete blocks.

Wayfinding Signage at the Ballpark

“With such a big space, wayfinding signage was important,” Mescher says. “Confluence designed the flag-mounted directional signs and field markers, and determined where all the signs should go. We recommended materials that would ease installation, deter vandalism, and be durable enough to withstand Iowa weather.” The collaborative approach produced stylish signs that are also hardworking enough to direct families to the right field for years to come.

“It sounds like a cliché, but this was truly a team effort,” Mescher says. “Confluence has such talented landscape architectural designers, we were able to act like a consultant on their team. We suggested some materials and hardware options that made things more durable or cost engineered the signs, and then we produced the dynamic signs they envisioned. It really was a cooperative experience.”
