Lansing Public Library: New Library Signage Sparks the Imagination
"A destination for the imagination" was the design goal for the Lansing Public Library's interior and exterior signage.
All of the signage, be it vinyl, metal, or acrylic, is beautifully executed and expertly installed. It is the final touch of our remodel that integrates information into our new spaces. Our staff and patrons have found it attractive and helpful.
Books unlock a world of wonder and mystery to young readers. Imaginations run wild as kids envision attending a wizarding school or making friends with a giant red dog. During the remodel of the Lansing Public Library in Lansing, Illinois, one of the primary design goals was to cultivate a space that would be a destination for the imagination.
Imagination to Reality
Architect Darren Schretter of Studio GC in Chicago redesigned the Lansing Public Library to capture the imagination of all ages. “Every element is expertly tied together,” says Carmine Giso, Latitude Signage expert who collaborated on the project. “Darren had a vision for the signage that mimicked the look of the architecture so everything would feel seamless.”
Throughout the open space of the library, signage is installed from the ceiling and appears to float on a beam. “This innovative signage solution directs patrons to different areas of the library without relying on wall space or adding clutter to the tops of bookshelves,” Giso says.
CONNECT TO NATURE
The clean-lined look continues with glass-walled study rooms that allow for natural light to flood the space. There’s a peaceful connection to nature when you can look up from a book and see green leaves and trees. Although you may be able to see a tree while you read from anywhere, as the Lansing Public Library has a living tree within its atrium.
This tree inspired the design of the children’s area. Guests enter the kids space under a “branch” that bends overhead. A large graphic print of an island treasure map sparks their imaginations and sets a playful tone to the room.
“Graphic signage adds so much energy to a space,” Giso says. “Images and quotes in vinyl in the children’s section and throughout the building bring the library to life.”
CREATIVE WAYFINDING
Even basic wayfinding signage is playful and imaginative. Colorful dimensional arrows wrap around columns and point guests to their destinations. Silhouetted symbols, such as a water faucet, above signs for water fountains and restrooms illustrate how no detail was too small for this project that serves the community.
“All of the signage, be it vinyl, metal, or acrylic, is beautifully executed and expertly installed. It is the final touch of our remodel that integrates information into our new spaces. Our staff and patrons have found it attractive and helpful,” says Debbie Albrecht, Director of Lansing Public Library.
