Integrating Custom Millwork into Architectural Signage

The addition of millwork can combine the natural beauty and warmth of wood, with architectural signage, to result in a solution that extends the character of your building and working environment into a showpiece, valuable for years to come.

At Latitude, donor walls and digital kiosks are a large portion of our business. Every donor wall and kiosk is truly a customized piece of architectural signage, built to fulfill the client's needs.

One of the first things to happen with a custom millwork project is a discussion and site visit to gain an understanding of what the client would like see in their finished product. It may be a certain type of interior architecture that they are trying to match, or as simple as a shape that they are trying to achieve.

What to Consider When Designing New Signage:

  • Is there a story, brand, or message to communicate through this piece?
  • What type of materials and colors will be incorporated?
  • If millwork is part of a donor recognition piece, how often will the donors be updated?
  • What is the wall or floor surface the piece will mount to?
  • If the millwork is to house digital display units, what are the dimensions?
  • If housing a digital display, what are the access and use needs that this housing must accommodate?

Some of Latitude’s custom millwork projects include:

These projects have utilized authentic wood such as Walnut, Teak, Maple, and Oak. The natural materials, combined with architectural signage pieces, provided a warm, pleasing signage solution, with a very customized and unique look.

Millwork Signage Project Examples:

Grinnell Regional Medical Center, Grinnell, Iowa

This project is unique in the fact that it combined a large cherry wood backer and moldings, with a touch-screen digital display unit to tell the story of the hospital, as well as adding touchscreen capabilities for donor recognition.

Graham Health Systems, Canton, Illinois

Much care and thought was put into the design and construction of this free-standing kiosk.

Multiple stain samples were provided to ensure a match to the existing woodwork so the kiosk would blend perfectly with its environment.

Hi-Plains PK-12 School Library, Hi-Plains, Colorado

This piece combines a whimsical tree with architectural lettering of a Dr. Seuss quote, which has been nicknamed "The Dr. Seuss Tree."

This custom millwork decorated tree brought a fun side to an informational piece directed to Elementary age students.

NuStyle Development’s The Wire, Omaha, Nebraska

The client requested Teak wood, as a representation of the look of old telephone poles. The wood was originally to ship from Costa Rica, but Latitude was able to work with a local dealer to obtain and provide that wood in a more timely manner.

Latitude laser etched a recurring design pattern into the wood to keep with the “wire” themes that are silkscreened on other acrylic signage throughout the building.
